Many people remember Fabio Grosso’s iconic goal in the 119th minute of the 2006 FIFA World Cup (though some look back at that moment more fondly than others.) It was a crucial moment in the tournament for Italy that is now etched in football history. With the instincts of a forward and the finesse of a midfield virtuoso, Grosso executed a flawless connection with Pirlo’s through ball. From his left boot came a curling first-time strike that nestled into the far corner of the net, leaving Lehmann utterly defeated. Germany’s hopes of World Cup glory on their home turf appeared to fade. Grosso erupted in exultation, shouting, “Non ci credo!” (“I can’t believe it!”). The most unexpected of heroes had thrust Italy into the most improbable of situations.
